Dental Implants by Dr. Sherri Worth
Dental implants can dramatically change individual’s lives. We understand the challenges associated with missing or damaged teeth. Dental implants offer an excellent alternative to bridges and partial dentures by providing artificial teeth that look and feel like your natural teeth. Since the implants are surgically placed into your jawbone, they provide a strong support for the teeth (crowns) that are placed over them. So, not only will you have a beautiful smile, but other functions should improve. You should have an easier time speaking. You should be able to enjoy eating those foods that had become difficult with temporary solutions. With implants, you can regain confidence in smiling again.

FAQ’s Answered by Dr. Sherri Worth
What are dental implants?
A dental implant has a couple components. First, there is a small titanium post, which, together with a screw, is inserted into the jawbone where a tooth is missing. This titanium osseointegrates with the bone to create a strong foundation for the artificial teeth, which brings us to the second component – the tooth. Once an implant is fixed into the jaw, a natural looking artificial tooth (a crown) fits over and is fastened to the titanium post. These two components together are what people are generally referring to when they talk about a dental implant.
Dental implants can be for a single missing tooth or multiple teeth. In fact, in some cases it is recommended to have all of the upper and/or lower teeth as dental implants. In cases where an individual needs multiple implants, more than one artificial tooth may be supported by a single titanium post or you can have an implant for each individual tooth.
Who can get dental implants?
Most people who are healthy enough for a routine tooth extraction are qualified candidates to receive dental implants. The age range can be quite inclusive, generally ranging from people in their 20’s and older. Each prospective implant patient needs to meet certain criteria in order to ensure that they are healthy and committed enough to have the procedure done. Getting implants is a life changing event, so preparation, safety and qualification is paramount. Individuals must have healthy gums and enough bone structure to accommodate the implant(s). Additionally, overall health is taken into consideration – patients with a history of diabetes, heart disease and heavy smokers, and other limiting conditions are evaluated, and determined on an individual basis.
What are the benefits of implants?
There are many benefits to receiving dental implants, some are cosmetic and some are more functional. Implants help people to smile again, and to re-gain confidence and improve their overall appearance. Missing or damaged teeth no longer are embarrassing or challenging. Aside from aesthetic improvements, patients will enjoy implants because they improve speech and eating difficulties that many people face. Patients start enjoying life again!
Are dental implants permanent?
Yes. A major benefit to dental implants is that they are there to stay. Dentures or other temporary solutions often less effective because they cannot offer the advantages of something permanent, and fixed in the mouth. Since the implants are secured to the jawbone, they create a solid foundation for the teeth.
They allow people to eat difficult foods like corn-on-the-cob, or a good steak without worrying. Once the implants are in the mouth, they are there to stay. Many implants can last the duration of an individual’s life, but longetivity is determined on the patient’s lifestyle and overall oral care.
Is it getting implants painful?
Receiving dental implants requires oral surgery, and with any kind of oral surgery procedure there can be some associated pain. The procedure is not generally painful. Most of the pain is avoided through properly applied local anesthesia, and many patients report to have minimal levels of discomfort. Following the procedure there may be some mild discomfort, which is normal, and can be treated through over-the-counter pain medication.
Who provides dental implants?
Implant Surgeons. In some cases portions of the procedure will be done by one doctor, and remaining by other(s). Dr. Sherri Worth and The Center for Reconstructive Dentistry generally provides dental implants in three phases. Beginning with examination and treatment planning and implant workup. Followed by the placement of the implant. An abutment is placed on the implant with a crown cemented to the abutment. The abutment is replicates a natural tooth that has been prepared for a crown.
How do I care for dental implants?
Dental implants need care, just like your other teeth. Brushing and flossing is key to having healthy gums and keeping a long-term healthy smile. Also, seeing a dental hygienist regularly is crucial, so they can thoroughly examine the teeth and gums to identify potential damage and to ensure optimal success.
What is the process for getting the implants placed inside the mouth?
First, titanium implants are inserted into the jaw, after which the bone and titanium fuse together over a process of two to six months. During this phase, temporary teeth are used as the crowns. When the bone and titanium posts have sufficiently fused, a small metal post is attached as an extension (abutment) to the implant screw. After the abutment, the crown is added. This crown is an artificial tooth that is beautifully created and personalized for you, and fastened to the implant. This is the final stage of the dental implant procedure and results in you being able to see your new, completed dental implant(s).
Under some circumstances, the implant can be placed into the bone and the abutment and crown can be placed immediately. This must be completed under ideal circumstances and cannot be done in all cases.
Are dental implants covered by insurance?
This usually depends upon the insurance company and type of insurance. Generally speaking, coverage is limited, however more and more dental insurance plans are covering costs.
